2. Theatre Anthropology
Theatre Anthropology by Chen Shixiong was published by Shanghai Ancient Books Press in 2013.
It was awarded the second prize of outstanding achievement by the Education Ministry. The book proposes the view that“theatre is the self-experimentation of the humans” and that the experiment was done first by the classification of the character types. Intraditional Chinese theatre, character types are reflected by hangdang and the corresponding convention. The classification of the character types in western theatre reached its zenith in classicism period, and was negated by the realistic school. Nevertheless, non-realistic schools andcontemporary experimental theatre still value character types. Making use of the comparison approach, the book covers a wide range of issues such as the relation between rituals and theatre, conventionalization and life-giving of performance art, the relation between theatre, puppet theatre and mask (lianpu). Traditional Chinese theatre has been emphasized in the book.
